Installed a remanufactured transmission from Europeantransmission and Parts. Filled transmission standpipe to overflowing with Audi dealer brand mineral oil for A-8s. Vag-com read transmission temp at 22 degrees Celsius. Started engine in park. Heard screeching sound from transmission that lasted 30 seconds then disappeared. Added total of about 9.5 L of transmission fluid until it was overflowing standpipe. Inserted fill plug at 40 degrees Celsius. Topped off front and center differentials with 75W90 Mobil one synthetic gear lube. With driving car at very light throttle, shifting is fairly quiet, but with moderate to full throttle screeching is loud. Also screeches when throttle is suddenly closed. The torque converter was carefully installed so that three clicks were heard during the procedure and the tranny pump was properly engaged. I also measured the distance from the front of the transmission case to the front of the torque converter to make certain it was properly seated. The measurements matched those in the Bentley manual. I ran the car with the wheels off the road. Without load there was no screeching. The screeching mainly occurs just before, during and after the transmission shifts, then goes away until the next shift point. There are no engine or transmission error lights illuminated on the dash board. Do I have a bad torque converter?
problem solved! European transmission and parts had installed the wrong tranny filter. A replacement was ordered from the Audi dealer and it had a pickup pipe 8 mm shorter that the one that had been installed. The original one was touching the bottom of the pan and was making the pump cavitate and starved for fluid. Tranny runs great now.
