Little History:1995 %25i 175K miles
When Transmission decides to function as expected the car runs fine and shifts as expected.

If driving normaly and comming to a stop then moving again 70% of the time it will start off and shift smothly through the whole range of gears, sometimes it decides to jump from 1st to 3rd or from 2nd to 4th.

Other Symptoms: sometimes not allways

In stop and go traffic when you start rolling with little gas it sometimes will hold on to 1st gear longer than it should then when you ease off the gass slightly it will shift abruptly with a hard jolt and jump from 1st to 3rd gear.

Sometimes the previous event will lead to a neutral effect if you let the car roll for a short distance it will engauge into gear again sometimes skipping a gear, sometimes I have had to make an almost complete stop and it will suddenly jump into gear.

A few times when it has skipped from 1st to 3rd after shifting abruptly it has gone into limp mode, I then pull over turn the car off for about 2 min and when I turn it on again it works very smothly for a while then exhibit the above shifting problems again.

I have been quoted 1500 for a rebuilt transmission but I have also been told this does not include the solenoids which I believe there are 4 or 5 in my transmission.

This is an intermitent problem which are allways the hardest to diagnose, but to me it seams like a solenoid or valve body problem since when it does work as it should there is no slipping at all it upshifts and downshifts perfectly.

Question from those who have worked many times on this model of transmission:

Since the solenoids are not included in a rebuilt transmission if one were to gamble and remove the pan which would be the first solenoid to change?

How dificult is it to replace the solenoids with transmission in vehicle, is it possible?
is it just a remove and replace procedure for each solenoid or is there more to it than meets the eye.

Thank you
