I have a 1989 735i with a six cylinder. the car only goes in reverse. I have found a low milage tranny in a 1989 735iL but it has a V-12 in it and the dipstick is on the passengers side. my question is, will the v-12 tranny fit into the 6?
For the 89 or 92 tranny questions: You can use any e32 or e34 m30 (6 cyl) 4hp22 tranny. You just have to watch the pin count (7 or 8pins) on the plug for the electronics. The valve body with the harness can be swapped between the two to make the tranny fit your application. You also have to watch which pan came on it and use the appropraite filter (deep or shallow pan) and corresponding filler tube with dipstick.
Straight swaps to look for would be your year AND month car.
Example: I'm in the process of fitting a 92 tranny into my 1/88 735i. I had to swap the valve body w/harness only. I did find out that I do need the deep style filter which was not installed on my deep pan replacement tranny.
