722.6 loud knocking and not engaging

i currently bought a 99 c280 with a 722.6 tranny. first and second gear both have a loud knocking this stops once in third or fourth gear. also the knocking persists when in park or neutral. any ideas what it could be?

Hello JT,
I am afraid your transmission is broken ! The symptoms you explain sound like a broken planetary set in the transmission.
To find out, remove the oil pan of the transmission and inspect the oilpan of any metal pieces !
