Hi, I have a 1999 c280 with 146000 miles on it, the transmission shifts fine but i am noticing a whirring noise when it's in park and in nuetral ( the sound increases with engine speed) the noise is gone when the car is placed in drive or reverse. I did however notice while driving a faint clickity sound (almost like worn CV joints on a frontwheel drive car) you have to turn the radio off and roll the windows up to hear it, the sound changes with road speed.

What could this be?

Does this sound like a rebuild in needed? or maybe a oil and filter change?

The AT oil and filter has never been changed to my knowlege. I got the car with 100000 miles on it.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

LG

Hi,
I am positive that your transmission have a problem with the gear-drive and you should visit a workshop as soon as possible.
This is a conmen problem an the 722.6 transmission units.

Every 60.000 mileage a service have to be performed!

Thanks Herb, after futher analysis I believe you are right. Whatever is making that sound is connected to the turbine in the torque converter.
