1.8T Shift Solenoid Problem

Our 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T with 60K miles does not want to shift from 4th gear.

Background:
1. Battery died and we jumped it. Fine for two days.
2. Third day, car started, shifted to drive away but would not moved from 4th gear. Neutral and reverse OK. All gear indicators on dash light up.The car only has 60,000 miles.
3. Mechanic ran test and found "P0753 Shift Solenoid A Electrical" fault code.

From what I have read in other forums, it appears that I can purchase the solenoid and replace rather than buy a new tranny.  We are the only middle class family in Orange County, California so I can't afford $2,000 to $6,000 for a new tranny.

Any help that anyone can provide would be gratefully appreciated. Sean

I have similar problem and fault code, most shops I have talked to suggest replacing entire trans. Hopefully just need to replace conductor strip and/or solenoid. So far I've got a manual published by bently which suggest to replace value body. The worst part is... the first shop I went to was the local vw dealer who took me for $250. just to read the codes. I can manually shift to all gears except 4th. Wish I could help you more... take a look at the following link, maybe this will get you out of 4th.

Hi, that your transmission NOT up-shift to 4gear can be many reason.

You don't can fix this by your self, you need proper testing tools.

You can start by performing a adaptation, this is like a adjustment to the transmission. You say, you replaced the battery on the car,-yes. After this the car lost all the memory,-he NOT more know how to shift, - you should have dun at this time a adaptation.
